Education
Horace Mann is considered the father of American education as we know it. During his years as Secretary of Education he published twelve that included his theory of the integral relationship between education, freedom, and Republican government. He wanted schools to become open and equal to all in an effort to create social harmony. He argued that economic wealth would increase through an educated public, therefore in the self-interest of business and the government to pay the taxation for public education. It was a way to give skills to those who would have, earlier, left proper schooling by the fourth grade, and have them become productive members of society. By accomplishing this, the economy would then blossom, benefiting the nation as a whole.
